Open Call For Docents

NCMA Docent Program – New Yearlong Training Program Starting in October 2021

Do you have a passion for art and volunteering? Enjoy working with people of all different ages and backgrounds? Do you like meeting new people? Docents are among the most important members of NCMA’s Museum Family. Best known by museum visitors as the informative men and women who conduct guided tours of the exhibitions for adults, docents are an integral part of the museum’s education department. No experience is needed to become a docent. What is required is enthusiasm for art and art museums and the willingness and commitment to participate in the regular weekly education sessions that docents attend to learn and share information about changing exhibitions and to learn and practice a variety of teaching methods used to conduct tours for the diverse populations that visit the museum.

How Many Hours Are Needed?

Selected applicants to the docent program are required to attend Monday morning meetings, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. starting in September and ongoing throughout the year (with exceptions for holidays). Trainings for new docents will follow general meetings and continue until 2:30 p.m. from October 2021 – June 2022. Attendance is mandatory for both general and training meetings barring a family/health emergency. Pre – pandemic, docents were required to complete 75 credits which translates into approximately 25 tours public tours per docent year. This requirement will resume in the near future.

Are There Any Prerequisites?

You don’t need to have any special education or an art background. You’ll receive training specific to your assignment.

All candidates will be interviewed by Museum staff and members of the Docent Training Committee.
New docents are required to offer proof of vaccination to be eligible to participate in this program.
At this time, all docent activities are conducted through weekly meetings via Zoom.
All docent communication is conducted via e-mail so access to a computer and e-mail is necessary to participate.

Will I Receive Any Perks?

You’ll receive benefits like: an invitation to the annual volunteer lunch, special volunteer walks-through of exhibitions, discounts in the Museum Store and on public programs, preferred parking, and free admission to other local cultural institutions.
