The museum’s Chief Curator, Franklin Hill Perrell, will talk about Erte’s amazing achievements in the graphic arts, sculpture, jewelry, fashion, and the theatre, along with the colorful era in which he lived.

Erte (1892-1990) the artist was born Romain de Tirtoff, at the pinnacle of the most stratified society in the world. Gifted in both dance and art, producing over 200 covers for Harpers Bazaar, fashion design for Poiret, and stage sets for the Paris Opera, Follies Bergere, Casino de Paris, and Bal Tabarin. Dubbed “the father of Art Deco,” Erte produced an extraordinary body of work in serigraphy and bronze. Erte’s achievements comprised a consummate celebration of Deco glamor: the bejeweled costumes of Poiret, the sets of Diaghilev’s Russian ballet, Ballets de Monte Carlo and the dances of Nijinsky, the glamor of Paris’ Faubourg St. Honore and the Riviera in its golden age. With his gifts for sumptuous color, richly patterned design, and engaging subject, Erte will forever be the quintessential Deco artist.
