As we celebrate the centennial of the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts which introduced Art Deco to the world, we must not forget the legacies of the numerous LGBTQIA+ artists involved with this innovative modern art movement. From the sapphic figural paintings of Marie Laurencin to the homoerotic mysticism of Andrey Avinoff, queer identities in the visual arts were often explored during the 1920s and 1930s, a hedonistic age of pleasure and decadence. At a time when same-sex activities were considered taboo in the mainstream but nevertheless flourished in the underground artistic scene, many LGBTQIA+ artists were prolifically active. In honor of Pride Month, Assistant Curator Alex C. Maccaro will discuss this often-overlooked aspect of art history, relating the histories and works of such artists to our exhibition Deco at 100.
