Plein Air Nature Sketching

Times: 1-1:50 pm     2-2:50pm     3-3:50 pm
Location: The Mansion

Observe the organic forms of forest trees and grassy hills while drawing outdoors in this plein-air (outdoors) sketching class. Open to all levels including beginners, participating artists will receive drawing supplies and sketchpads to continue practicing beyond the class. Attention to value, composition and form are emphasized as we draw nature in with our breath and release the splendor of our surroundings on the drawing surface. Artist and instructor Marilyn Turtz will guide the class on this creative journey in nature. Standing easels and stools will be provided for comfort. Each participant will receive drawing supplies and a sketchbook to use on-site and then take home. No previous drawing experience required. Please dress in weather-appropriate attire. Sunscreen and insect repellant recommended. ADDITIONAL $15

Healing Through the Arts for Teachers and Parents

We invite teachers, parents and care partners who have had to endure all the extreme stresses, pain and anxiety of this past year while continuing to be the stronghold for those they care for and love. Join certified Art Therapist Deborah Adler in this collage-based workshop that invites participants to share their personal challenges in a safe and comforting atmosphere where we will focus on letting go, rebuilding anew, and moving forward with positivity and gratitude in our hearts.

Mandala Making in the Studio

Times: 1-1:50 pm     2-2:50pm     3-3:50 pm
Location: The Manes Center

Enjoy the meditative and creative practice of drawing mandalas in this hands-on studio activity. Lead by art therapist and artist, Mollie Bassett, participants will follow along to step-by-step instructions inspired by geometric shapes and organic lines to form a circular pattern. Mandala, a Sanskrit word for circle, has long been identified by some cultures and philosophies as a representation of the universe, cyclical change, creativity, and deepening connections. Using pencil, paper and drawing tools, become inspired by the Mandala’s several meanings to form your own personal pattern and inspirational meaning. All materials will be supplied. ADDITIONAL $15

Mindful Sculpture Stroll

Join Rebecca Hirschwerk of the Museum’s Education Department for an hour of observation and reflection as we gather for a mindful walk through the Museum’s outdoor Sculpture Park. Let all distractions fall away as you unplug and unwind, using our grounds and sculpture to focus on our breathing, notice our reactions, and practice the art of looking on purpose without judgement.

 A Naturalist’s Summer Journey

With Virginia Dankel, Environmental Educator. Join us for an educational nature walk across Museum grounds with Environmental Educator Virginia Dankel. Our journey will include aspects of Forest Bathing, the practice of immersing yourself in nature using your senses in a mindful way to promote physical, mental, emotional healing.

Mindful Journaling

Location: The Mansion

Mindfulness on the page, inside the covers of your own personal journal, is an intimate way of focusing on some of the stimuli that induce tranquility. Led by a writing expert from the Bryant Library, this literary path to wellness can go home with you.

Join us in the Museum’s galleries to explore our current exhibitions La Belle Époque and Andy Warhol: A Life in Pop with guided tours led by Museum staff and our knowledgeable Docents.

FIRST RESPONDERS ARE FREE

The Museum is grateful for all of the hard work and sacrifices of Long Island’s First Responders during the Covid-19 crisis. To show our thanks, this program is offered free for nurses, doctors, and EMTs. Space is limited. To reserve your spot please email nfletcher@nassaumuseum.org.

DONATE A NON-PERISHABLE FOOD ITEM

Donations will be shared with The Food Pantry at Shelter Rock Church in Old Westbury. On the weekend of the event, participants are invited to bring non – perishable food items to The Manes Center.
