Sara Driver is an American independent filmmaker, director, and producer and a key figure in the independent film scene which flourished in lower Manhattan from the late 1970s through the 1990s. This program will include a screening of her documentary, Boom for Real: The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat (2017), on the young artist’s pre-fame life in the burgeoning downtown New York arts scene before the city’s major changes through the 1980s followed by a Q & A with Driver and Al Diaz.

Al Díaz is an artist and musician whose career spans five decades; he is a sought-after expert on New York City counterculture art. At the early age of 15, Al Diaz was an influential first-generation subway graffiti artist known as “BOMB – ONE.” His friendship and artistic collaboration with high school schoolmate Jean-Michel Basquiat on SAMO©, a late 70s Avant-garde graffiti tag project. Al Diaz is featured in several films, including Driver’s documentary Boom for Real: The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat.
