Join us this summer for a unique blend of indoor and outdoor creative adventures! Our popular Summer Art Lab program has been designed with 4 newly-themed week-long sessions.

Using current exhibitions at the Nassau Museum, sculptures located on our 145-acre nature preserve, and contemporary artists as inspiration, Art Lab’s young artists immerse themselves in the creative process. With the chance for exploring the fresh air of our forests and trails paired with devoted studio time in our Manes Art and Education Center, Art Lab artists will create unique works of art in a memorable summer experience.

Our educator Einav* makes sure to adapt experiences based on age and encourages students to explore a variety of new materials, techniques and processes to challenge and engage. Students and families can choose how many weeks they wish to sign up for. All artmaking materials are included.

Enrollment is limited to 15 students per session and pre-registration is required. Register for 1, 2, 3, or all 4 weekly sessions!

This year, we’re going back to basics and exploring the elements of art and design, the foundations upon which the great works from art history were created: scale, line, color, and texture. Register for 1, 2, 3, or all 4 weekly sessions!

Week 1: July 8 – 12
Art Big and Small: In art and design, the principle of scale refers to the relative size of one object compared to another, typically the size of the artwork to the viewer’s body. Students will have the opportunity to engage with the outdoor sculptures on our 145-acre nature preserve, and explore the myriad of scaling possibilities while creating their own unique masterpieces.
Week 2: July 15 – 19
Connecting the Dots: Explore line in two and three dimension, as well as the changing use of this form over time. Lines can be used to define shapes and figures, but also to indicate motion, emotion, and other elements. Works of art from the museum’s collection, as well as throughout history, will be used to inspire creativity.
Week 3: July 22 – 26
All About Color: Artists can use colors for many reasons, including setting moods and highlighting importance. This week, learn the basics of the color wheel, warm and cool colors, value, saturation, and contrast, while exploring NCMA’s exhibition, RED (on view July 20 – November 10, 2024).
Week 4: July 29 – August 2
Sense of Touch: Texture is the feeling of a surface, real or represented. This week, create works of art with varied surface qualities as well as the illusion of texture, all while exploring a variety of natural and art based materials.
